Coffee is grown in five areas: the Central, Western, South-Western, Northern, and Eastern regions. The last one comprises the Busoga regions (Robusta) and the Mountain Elgon region (Arabica). The Northern Region comprises the Mid-North (Robusta) and North-Western region (Arabica & Robusta).
Robusta coffee is native to Uganda and dominates much of the production and exports. Since the mid-1970s though, Arabica coffee production has steadily grown in Uganda.
Coffee is a perennial crop. However, there are two main harvest seasons in Uganda for both Arabica and Robusta coffee (March-June and September-November). The main production season for Robusta ranges May-August for Masaka and Western regions and November to February for Central, Eastern regions.
Coffee takes an average of three years to start producing. The costs of maintaining coffee especially after reaching the flowering stage is quite low.
Both the varieties of coffee are grown around the world that suit best for each variety. Also, these two varieties have distinctively different flavours to satisfy you. While the Robusta coffee is bitter and bold, the Arabica coffee is sweet and mild. Wherein the two varieties are blended to get the perfect cup.
Optimal coffee-growing conditions include cool to warm tropical climates, rich soils, and few pests or diseases.
